African music continues to go from strength to strength on the world stage. For the first time, Afrobeats music will be ranked on the premier song charting platform, which is billboard.com.
The chart will go live on the 29th of March and rank the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs based on the same weighted formula for all of its other genres.
This is genuinely a massive step forward for African music and an enormous win for the music coming from this continent. The ability to have its chart will help many AfroBeats artists gain a different level of global exposure to ensure that more than just the big heavyweights in that space get their time in the spotlight.
In A press statement, the Afro Nation founder, co-head of UTA London, and Event Horizon Founder Obi Asika had this to say of the major coup,
The last decade has seen Afrobeats explode into a worldwide phenomenon, influencing culture and fashion across the globe and I am humbled to have contributed to growing the genre alongside many talented, passionate people.
Who knows what other African genres will be able to work through the door that this massive announcement has created. My cards are on Amapiano, being the next genre to have its chart on billboard.com.
